Q & A With Tyler Barisciano || Winchester, VA Jiu Jitsu and MMA

Photos By: Keri Gaudreau of Keri Gaudreau Photography

This past month, Fire & Ice Fighting Championships held their “Gods of War” Amatuer and Professional Mixed Martial Arts event at the BodyRenew SportsPlex. The Winchester Jiu Jitsu Academy’s very own, Tyler Barisciano, stepped into the cage for the first time and put on an amazing show, finishing his opponent, Trevor Smith, in devastating fashion. In what could arguably be the most exciting fight of the night, Tyler won in the 3rd round by way of Rear Naked Choke. We recently sat down with Tyler to get his take on the fight, and to learn more about him and his training program.

Stats: Tyler Barisciano
Age: 19
Height: 5’4”
Weight: 125
Record: 1-0

What was your motivation to get in the cage? I’ve always wanted to fight, ever since I was a kid. Being a wrestler, fighting seemed to be the next stage in my progression as a competitor.

Watching the playback of the fight, give us your thoughts about your performance? I thought it was a very good performance for my first fight. I wasn’t initially going to take the fight straight to the ground but my wrestling background kicked in and helped me control and ultimately dominate the fight.

What did you do to prepare for this fight? We held an 8 week fight camp and we really focused on the “Shark Tank”, which is when we have 3 minute rounds and halfway through the round, they send in a fresh guy. They basically beat on you to get you as tired as possible and as the weeks progressed, the training got easier. I also went on 5 miles runs everyday to enhance my cardio. And lots of weightlifting.

What does future hold for you in terms of fighting? I definitely plan on getting back in the cage hopefully by July. and I'm confident that as my skill sets progress, I plan on going pro.

How does this experience compare to other life experiences? It's the craziest adrenaline rush that I’ve ever felt and having so many people there screaming for me and supporting me was just unbelievable. When my opponent tapped, it felt so good to get the finish in my first fight.

Any advice for people thinking about stepping into the cage? Definitely make sure it’s something you want to do. It seems like all fun and games when you’re watching it on TV, but it's a completely different thing to step into the cage and do it.

Anyone you want to thankI’d like to thank the gym and all the people that were there to get me ready for this fight and my training partner Ravon for helping me prepare mentally and physically for this fight.

20 Questions with...Our Resident Blue Belts-Brad Dinklocker, Dusty Hillyard, and Tom Tantillo|| Winchester, Virginia Jiu Jitsu

Brad.jpg

Name: Brad Dinklocker

Age: 23

Where are you from: Warrenton VA

Occupation:  Graduate Student

How long have you been training at the gym: Four and a half years

  1. What got you into training:  I wrestled in high school and stopped when I went to college.  I was running 5 days per week and weight lifting 2-3 days per week and was still gaining weight and I didn’t feel good in general.  I decided I wanted to fight MMA and came upon this gym.  The owner convinced me to try BJJ before starting to learn stand up and I’ve been hooked ever since.

  2. What's your favorite part about training: I love grappling in general, but even more I like to push myself and that is exactly what happens physically and mentally on the mat. The knowledge required to do this sport is a big draw for me.  Plus when you do it right it is effortless which is just cool.

  3. Favorite warm up:  Shrimping, then 20-10s followed by the spins, leg-under, hip-up/ab drill trio.

  4. Least favorite warmup:  When I’m late for warmups.

  5. What is your proudest moment on the mats: The first time I hit an oma plata and held the position.  It had taken me forever to actually do it during a roll; new guys and girls were coming in and hitting it left and right and I still wasn’t getting it. Proudest moment in life: I am proud that I have a happy life and that I am surrounded by great people.

  6. What do you like to do for fun outside of the gym: Cook, hike/backpack, do work around the house, and hang out and play music with my friends from home.

  7. If you were a professional fighter, what would be your fight name:  Brad “Just Brad” Dinklocker

  8. If you could eat only 1 meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?:  Steamed blue crabs and shrimp, corn on the cob, asparagus sautéed with garlic and onions, sliced tomato with salt, pepper, and olive oil, sweet potato fries, and sweet tea.  (If you couldn’t tell I really like food.)

  9. What is your favorite holiday:  Probably Thanksgiving, but with my family all of the holidays are focused around the food so they all sit pretty equally with me.

  10. Do you have any special talents:  I can play the spoons.

  11. If you could be a superhero/action hero, who would you be:  Spider man

  12. If you won the lottery, what would be the first 3 things you would buy:  I would pay off school, pay off my mom’s house, and then I would go to some of the best restaurants around the world.

  13. What is the best gift you have ever been given: I’ve gotten a lot of great gifts, but my backpacking backpack was an awesome one.  I also love getting really nice wool socks as gifts.

  14. What is your biggest pet peeve:  Hearing people chewing or swallowing, I know that no one can help making the noise, but it bothers me so much!

  15. What is your idea of a perfect day: Wake up around 8 or 9, train, then do some work around the house, eat lunch around mid afternoon, then hang out with friends while we hike or putz around outside, drink good beer and cook dinner together, and then sit around a fire all night having a good time.  I would probably eat again late at night.

  16. What's your fighting spirit animal: Tasmanian Devil

  17. If you could master one skill you don’t have right now, what would it be: Blacksmithing or being a mechanic.

  18. If you could have breakfast with any three people, alive or dead, who would they be and what would you have for breakfast: Yvon Chouinard, Andy Samberg, and José Andrés and we would have baked salmon, scrapple, and rice in broth for breakfast.

  19. What was the last movie you watched at the movie theatre and what did you think about it: Straight Outta Compton, it was okay.  It was kind of all over the place, but I think the actors did great jobs of portraying the characters.

  20. What's something few people know about you:  I did not play any sports until I was 13.  Up until then I was heavily involved in theater and at the time intended to act through high school and maybe as a career.  I was a member of the Junior Thespian Society.
